Tragic! Car Racing Slam Into Sedan Car And Killed The Driver
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman was killed and her daughter injured Friday morning when the Nissan Sentra they were in was struck by a car that witnesses said appeared to be racing another vehicle on Edgewood Avenue North, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said.
Lt. Rich Buoye with the JSO Traffic Homicide Unit said witnesses told police that around 11:30 a.m. a silver Dodge Charger was racing another car north down Edgewood Avenue when it struck the Sentra, which was turning either off or onto Glen Street.
The impact spun the Sentra and ejected the adult woman passenger. She died at the scene. The Charger flipped violently down the street, rolling over a car parked in a nearby strip mall before ending up in bushes lining the roadway.
“All we heard was a loud like ‘errrr’ and just heard a smack and we came running seeing a car flipping,” witness Allen Faircloth said. “You could tell it was two muscle cars. So it had to be. They were definitely going fast.”
The other racing vehicle, possibly a dark-colored Dodge Charger or Challenger, left the scene, Buoye said. Police will be checking any surveillance video from surrounding businesses to help track down that vehicle, he said.
“This is completely preventable. Racing up Edgewood? I said before in a situation like this with these young kids, you get to the point where (they think) they’re indestructible, nothing’s going to happen to them. Well, nothing happened to them. But something happened to this innocent woman who was just driving in a car and now someone’s mother, someone’s daughter has passed away,” Buoye said. “Let’s keep her and her family in our thoughts, in our prayers, but we can do better than this.”
Buoye said the driver of the Sentra and the driver and a passenger from the Charger were all taken to the hospital. One had serious injuries, firefighters said. It appeared no one in the Sentra was wearing a seat belt, Buoye said.
